Abstract

This study is an attempt to highlight the socio-political situation of Punjab from 1849 to 1857. East India Company used propaganda tools to create an illusion that Punjab stood by them in the War of Independence. In reality, however, Punjab fought against them due to a multiplicity of reasons- which are also the main contours of Punjab’s socio-political scenario of the above mentioned era. The era - as has been developed in this study - is characterised by land settlement quite contrary to the aspirations of the locals apart from the establishment of roads and other means for the transportation of commodities - alongside the connected heavy taxation. Furthermore, the locals were alienated from their culture, religion, language and customs which resulted in the uprooting of the social, cultural and linguistic roots which can be felt even to this day. The thesis has been established with the help of primary resources on the issues which are an antidote to the British propaganda on the topic. |
