Abstract

Hobson-Jobsonis a glossary of Anglo-Indian words and terms which is compiled in the late nineteenth century. It was written by Henry Yule and Arthur Cook Burnell and first published in 1886. Burnell died before the work was finished, and most of it was by Yule, who, however, fully acknowledged Burnell's contributions. . Although glossaries and dictionaries are the subject of linguistic but this glossary text has great relevancy to the socio political situation of nineteenth century.it is an etymological glossary of words from Indian languages which came into use during the British rule of India. It documents the words and phrases that entered and absorbed in European languages from Indian languages۔it included illustrative quotations that were drawn from a wide range of travel texts, histories, memoirs, novels and others. It does not only records the vocabulary but the culture of the British India. It encompasses aspects of the history, trade, peoples, and geography. This glossary has never been superseded. This article gives its introduction, critically discus incentive and significance of the text. |
