Abstract

The question of free will and fatalism, like all great minds, have been a life-long preoccupation of great Persian poet Maulana Jalaldudin Rumi and Allama Muhammad Iqbal, poet philosopher. Being an Ash’arite Maulana, by most of the commentators, has been categorised as Fatalist and by few as Amr Bain ul Amreenia, the middle path. Allama Muhammad Iqbal as being a vocal advocate of free will, appears to differ from his spritual master Maulana Rumi. Hence there is a conflict between these two towering figures of Eastern literature. This Article investigates this conflict in detail and concludes that most of commentators of Maulana Rumi have missed out some important dimensions. One of those missing dimensions is nature of poetic and mystical experiences, which vary from time to time and the poetry which is the outcome of such a varying experience is bound to be conflicting. |
